Double Take

Double Take: The SLG's Contemporary Collection exhibited in two Southwark Secondary Schools.

Double Take was a collaborative project between Ernst & Young, Bacon's College, St Saviour's & St Olave's School and the SLG. The project represents a new way of working between a private company, two secondary schools and a contemporary art gallery.

The project began in September 2007 with a series of visits to contemporary art venues, work experience for students at the SLG and a series of workshops towards the creation of an audio guide. In January 2008 the first exhibition in an 18-month programme of work from the SLG contemporary collection was installed in both schools. In March 2009 the project culminated in an exhibition curated by the students and displayed in a temporary architectural space in the school.

The project was designed to encourage the students at both schools to understand and develop the skills involved in managing an exhibition of this scale, broadening their understanding of the contemporary art world as well as learning about and experiencing art through its context in the gallery.

In November 2009 Double Take won the Arts & Business Young People Award for a collaboration that 'stood out on the shortlist through highly intelligent involvement with young people, active participation and a far-reaching educational purpose.'

St Saviour's & St Olave’s School, partners in the project, were given a London Education Partnership Award for 'Excellent professional practice in curriculum and student support in arts, design and communication' for their part in Double Take.

The project was also shortlisted for the Children and Young People Now Arts and Culture Award
