Location Scouts

SAT 5 SEP - SUN 4 OCT 2015, SCEAUX GARDENS ESTATE

Overview

Location Scouts is a new work by artist collective They Are Here which has been developed over the course of a Play Local residency at South London Gallery.

The work comprises a series of questions which invite the residents of Sceaux Gardens estate, located adjacent to the SLG, to re-imagine their surroundings as a series of possible locations for a big budget feature film.

The questions are posed via a series of large fly-posters across the estate, ranging from the everyday to the fantastical. Residents can participate by texting or emailing photographs of different sites which they think could be used for a film scene. These submissions are gathered to form a pool of images, enabling players to compare their contribution with others.

Location Scouts builds on a series of works by They Are Here, including Witness (2009 – ongoing), Re-Shoot (2009) and Avoiding The Camera (2014 - ongoing), which explore image-making as a social, participatory and collaborative process.

Location Scouts has been supported by Keepmoat Ltd.

They Are Here is steered by Helen Walker and Harun Morrison, the duo are based in Birmingham and London. Their work ranges from situation-specific projects that develop across multi-year encounters, to games that can be played by incidental or invited participants. They work across media and types of site, particularly online and civic spaces. Institutions they have developed or presented work include: Camden Arts Centre, CCA Glasgow, Chisenhale Gallery, Grand Union (Birmingham), LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre), New Art Gallery Walsall, National Theatre Studio, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, South London Gallery, STUK (Leuven, Belgium), wpZimmer (Antwerp, Belgium), VIVID Projects (Birmingham) and Whitechapel Gallery.
