Fourth Plinth Project

The Fourth Plinth Education Project provides an exciting opportunity for young people in Southwark to both investigate and engage with themes addressed in Yinka Shonibare’s Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle and the Fourth Plinth as a public art programme in London.

The SLG is working with three secondary schools (Peckham Academy, St Michael and All Angels and St Saviour’s & St Olave’s) in south London, and two community groups (Refugee Youth and LIFE for Girls) to develop a series of short films.

Working alongside a team of artists and film-makers, the young people are creatively exploring and responding to ideas around cultural identity, migration and trade to produce the films.

Starting with Yinka Shonibare’s emblematic use of textiles, the young people are engaging in a series of practical workshops, discussions and trips to develop their ideas around cultural London.

The resulting films will be screened across a variety of locations including the Fourth Plinth website and at the SLG as part of Contemporary Africa On Screen.
