Hannah Lees/OPENYOURKIMONO: Website + Artist’s Book Launch

Last Fridays

Fri 27 Jun 2014, 6-9pm, Bookshop, Free

Overview

www.thisisthepath.com is a website by Hannah Lees, commissioned by OPENYOURKIMONO, which consists of a text piece, compiled by the artist from various self-help and Buddhist texts, overlaid with a scanned image of sand from a Lanzarote beach, and a soundtrack of generic waves on a beach, taken from YouTube.

As well as the website, Lees has also produced an Artist’s Book (edition of 30) to coincide with the website launch, which includes the same text work, an A3 poster print image of a beach in Turkey, and sheets of laminated sand from the same beach in Lanzarote.

For the launch, visitors had the opportunity to view the website on tablet computers and to view and purchase the publication.

No booking required.

OPENYOURKIMONO is a digital platform that offers hosting and existence to online projects and support to related offline events. Participating artists are commissioned to objectify websites as art works and hereby become part of an extended network of live websites databased on the website of OPENYOURKIMONO. OPENYOURKIMONO is a project founded and curated by Femke Oortwijn and Tristan Stevens.

Hannah Lees’ work investigates ideas of the cycles of constancy and mortality; the sense that things come to an end and the potential for new beginnings. This constancy, be it in religion or in organic matter, is visible in her practice through her attempts to make sense of and recognise traces of life. Her work focuses towards an understanding of the essential nature of the materials she uses. Lees completed a Post-graduate Diploma at Chelsea College of Art, London (2011) and a foundry residency at the Royal College of Art, London (2012). Recent exhibitions and projects include: Wearing Potentiality Paradise Row Gallery, London (2014); Conversation #5 Andrew Gillespie, Jack Lavender & Hannah Lees, Weekends, Millington Marriot, London (2014); Young London, V22, London (2013); The Unpainted Landscape, Mihai Nicodim Gallery, Los Angeles (2013); Thin Air, SLOPES, Melbourne (2013). Forthcoming exhibitions and projects include: Everything That Happens Simply Happens, Whitstable Biennale, Whitstable (2014); Forest Studio Residency, Stour Valley Arts, Kent (2014)
