Play Local Topics: Jess Thom

Wed 3 Sep 2014, 7pm, Free, Booking Essential

Overview

A monthly forum for anyone interested in play, art, socially engaged practice and everything in between.

Each month a guest speaker presents a topic for discussion, focusing on themes relating to the Play Local project. A crossover between training, a discussion group and a social gathering; this is an opportunity to meet other local people and share ideas amongst the group. Refreshments are provided.

In September, Jess Thom leads the session. Thom is committed to increasing opportunities for disabled and non-disabled people to share in unusual creative play experiences and will use this as the starting point for her talk.

Jess Thom is an artist, writer, playworker and part time superhero based in London. She graduated from The Royal College of Art in 2005 and has worked as an artist educator and workshop facilitator for The Tate, The South London Gallery and The Chisenhale. Jess Thom is the Project Coordinator at Oasis Children’s Venture, a well-established play organisation in Stockwell. Thom has extensive experience within the adventure play sector with a particular focus on inclusive play.

In 2006 Thom was diagnosed with Tourettes Syndrome, a neurological condition that causes involuntary movements and noises called tics. In 2010 she turned her ‘problem’ into her power when she co-founded Touretteshero, an organisation that celebrates the humour and creativity of Tourettes and shares it with as wide an audience as possible. Touretteshero’s mission is to reclaim the most frequently misunderstood condition on the planet by challenging people to think differently about it, and react creatively to it. In 2013 Thom gave a TEDx talk about Touretteshero at the Royal Albert Hall.

Free to attend and open to anyone aged 16 or over. Childcare is available on request.
