Join us for a filmmaking masterclass with director Sam Masud. Masud’s first feature My Pure Land is a modern day feminist Western set in Pakistan and was the UK’s foreign-language film submission for the 2018 Academy Awards. Attendees of the masterclass can view the South by South film screening of Kalushi at 7pm for free. Kalushi (2017) directed by Mandla Dube tells the true story of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu a 19-year-old street hawker who became an icon of South Africa’s liberation

BIOGRAPHY

Sam Masud is a 2017 Screen International Star of Tomorrow. His first feature My Pure Land, is set and filmed in Pakistan and based on the extraordinary true story of one woman and her family who defended their home and land from 200 bandits. It premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and is the UK submission to the Oscars in the Foreign Language category. Previously Sam’s short film; Two Dosas, won awards at the London Short Film Festival, Aspen shortsfest, River to River in Florence and Shufflefest voted by Danny Boyle. Sam also wrote and directed Adha Cup which was the first Urdu language drama commissioned by Channel Four, going on to develop it as a six part TV series with the BBC.
