'Sunday's Best 1' HD Video (2016) By Larry Achiampong

Winter 2015 - Spring 2016

Larry Achiampong's practice uses sound, live performance and imagery to explore representations of identity in the digital age and the dichotomies found within a world dominated by facebook/tumblr/youtube-based cultures. As part of his current research he is interested in the shifts and mutations of traditions and language that are birthed as a result of colonisation, and how they affect people today. In particular, the relationship between Christianity and its impact on Larry's tribe - The Ashanti

This subject is directly relevant to Larry’s childhood experiences of worshiping with various faith groups throughout London. This is the focal point of a new HD video work (of the same title), filmed by the artist in one of the churches he used to attend - Our Lady of The Assumption Catholic Church in Bethnal Green.

With South London Gallery, Larry will work with churches using community halls and other spaces on housing estates local to the gallery which, like the SLG, have developed relationships with residents and the locality through itinerant events and activities. He will attend faith sessions and with their permission film services and places of worship, and at a later point, invite congregations back to the gallery; opening up discussion on the importance of space in relation to prayer and how environments within communities create fusion with rituals of the church.
