Fri 21 & Sat 22 Jun 2013, 7pm, £5/£3 conc, Volta Great Sutton Street

Overview

A reading by New York-based artist Tyler Coburn in central London's newest data storage facility.

Tyler Coburn’s publication and performance, entitled I’m that angel, explore the conditions of how we work on and against the computer, narrated from the perspective of a 'content farmer', an emergent type of online journalist contracted to generate articles based on words peaking in Google Trends.

As a text, I’m that angel  takes shape as a book of found quotes, trending language, anecdotes, notes and rants. Periodically, Coburn holds readings of this publication at data centres worldwide, previously at the Google Building in New York in 2013 and at Digital Realty in Los Angeles in 2012. This will be his first reading in England. These readings give the audience access to the facilities that compose the physical form of the Internet – to occupy, in short, the sites where 'the cloud' is kept.

The two performances take place at Volta Great Sutton Street, which is central London's first new data centre in a decade. Previously operating as a data centre for twenty-five years (under the ownership of Reuters and BT, amongst others), the 91,000 sq ft site is being completely redesigned and refitted to create one of the most energy efficient data centres in London.
