The Sixth Housing Estate: Fragment

Brandon LaBelle

Sun 27 Jul, 1-4pm, Free

Overview

Elmington Estate, Shirley House, Picton Street, Camberwell, London, SE5 7PQ

Cookout, Social Gathering, Sonic Art & Self-build Event

Writer, theorist and artist-in-residence, Brandon LaBelle introduces the first step of The Sixth Housing Estate project: the construction of a fragment. Fragment articulates the ideas behind the project by inviting residents of Elmington Estate, members of the public and selected guests to participate in a co-operative event towards the fabrication of a corner of a room, built in situ on the estate. Decisions as to what type of ‘room’ was constructed was made collectively by those present. The event attempted to expose the material elements of home-life, and inspire reflections about what constitutes public housing.

Conversations and meetings were informally recorded across the course of the afternoon. These conversations, alongside others recorded during LaBelle’s two week residency will inform the making of a co-authored script and audio work, which will be presented later in the year at the SLG.

All materials and equipment were provided by the SLG. There wass a special live sonic contribution by percussionist, Paul Abbott, who performed the drum-kit in dialogue with the event.
