Overview
A presentation of a feature-length video by artists Raphaël Cuomo and Maria Iorio from Twisted Realism. This ensemble of work, which includes photos, collected documents and vintage objects, takes Pasolini’s film Mamma Roma, 1962, as a starting point to research the intertwined histories of urbanisation, migration and cinema in a period of significant economic change in Italy following World War II. The 1960s in Italy was an era marked by a reorganization of capitalism, increasing consumption and the emergence of new technologies of vision in the form of television.
Following the screening London-based writer Marina Vishmidt will be in conversation with artists Raphaël Cuomo and Maria Iorio.
Raphaël Cuomo and Maria Iorio have collaborated since 2006, but they became particularly interested in Mamma Roma in 2009 when they undertook a residency in a neighbourhood in Rome which served as the backdrop in the film.
