EXHIBITION: THE PEDESTRIANS, 1 – 21 APRIL 2011
In April 2011 New York-based artists Charles Atlas and Mika Tajima presented a collaborative project, The Pedestrians at the South London Gallery. The Pedestrians examined the act of walking in its various social and political forms: from the march formations in processions and demonstrations, and the idle strolling flâneur, to the choreography of everyday movement in dance. Charles Atlas and New Humans took part in Frieze Sounds 2013.
Charles Atlas (b. St. Louis, Missouri, 1949) is one of the foremost interpreters of dance, theatre and performance on video, and has collaborated with such international performers as Marina Abramović, Antony and the Johnsons, Leigh Bowery, Michael Clark, Merce Cunningham, Diamanda Galás, John Kelly and Yvonne Rainer. For his collaboration with Bloomberg SPACE and the South London Gallery in 2013 Atlas created a 360 degree video installation using original, manipulated and found footage from a variety of sources including the Bloomberg digital archives.
Mika Tajima (b. 1975, Los Angeles, California, USA) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Mika studied for a BA from Bryn Mawr College (1997), an MFA from Columbia University (2003), and attended The Fabric Workshop and Museum Apprentice Training Program (2003). Her work has been included in the exhibitions Transaction Abstraite, New Galerie, Paris (2011); Elizabeth Dee Gallery, New York (2011); The Double, Bass Museum, Miami (2010); Knight’s Move, Sculpture Center, Long Island City (2010); Today is Not a Dress Rehearsal, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2009); The Extras, X Initiative, New York (2009); 2008 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2008). She is part of the music-based performance group New Humans.
