Co-published with Sternberg Press and Bergen Kunsthall on the occasion of Magali Reus: As Mist, Description, 23 March – 27 May 2018.
Magali Reus creates sculptures that are seemingly recognisable, often appropriating the symbolism of everyday ordinary objects from our surroundings. For her solo exhibition at the South London Gallery, Reus presented a new body of meticulously produced sculptures. Visual elements are reproduced, layered and repeated in works that are individually crafted using complex casting, moulding and weaving techniques, pitting the aggressive emptiness of manufacture against the slow diligence of handiwork. The works were presented in spatial chapters and designed to appear in a state of transition – frozen in progress, caught mid-function, or in a state of restoration, ruin or abandonment.
