Publisher Of The Month

Spector Books - Publisher of the Month

Strange Attractor publications

Since April 2015 the SLG shop has been collaborating with a selection of independent publishers to highlight the rich and diverse range of publishing today. Once a month, a new publisher presents a curated selection of publications on the publishers’ shelf.

CURRENT PUBLISHER OF THE MONTH

Spector Books, 18 Sep – 28 Oct 2018

Spector’s publishing practice is settled squarely in the intersection of art, theory, and design. Based in Leipzig Germany, our publishing house explores the possibilities offered by an active exchange between all parties involved in the book production process: artists, authors, book designers, lithographers, printers and bookbinders. The book as medium is turned into a stage, a site of encounter for productive exchange.

PREVIOUS PUBLISHERS IN 2018

Strange Attractor, 14 – 19 Aug 2018

Strange Attractor Press is an entirely independent publishing house, founded in 2003, based in London, UK and run by Mark Pilkington and Jamie Sutcliffe.

They aim to celebrate unpopular culture and to document and historicise rare, lost, marginal or rejected history, culture and knowledge. Increasingly they have also come to see their role as documenting British underground, fringe and counter culture, from medieval heretics via nineteenth-century decadent poets, the twentieth-century literary and musical undergrounds, and current strands in art, music and writing.

Charco Press, 24 – 29 Jul 2018

Charco Press is a new Edinburgh-based independent publisher. Their mission is to bring outstanding, award-winning fiction by today’s Latin American authors to English-speaking readers for the first time. They published their first titles in September 2017, and have already received widespread acclaim and been nominated for a number of prizes. The Man Booker International Prize 2018 selected one of their first titles, Die, My Love by Argentinean author Ariana Harwicz, in their longlist. It is also one of Charco’s goals to work with emerging translators and support them in the early stages of their careers in literary translation.

Dostoyevsky Wannabe, 26 Jun – 1 Jul 2018

Dostoyevsky Wannabe publish independent, underground and experimental books, anthologies and samplers across a number of different imprints. Based in Manchester but working with writers from all over the world, they pioneer an idiosyncratic publishing model, a zero budget operation about to embark on Dostoyevsky Wannabe Cities: a new imprint with events happening in London, Brooklyn, Manchester, Santiago, Madrid, and more. This year they made the shortlist for the Republic of Consciousness Prize for small, independent presses with Isabel Waidner’s Gaudy Bauble.
