Mimmo Paladino
Carte Siciliane No. 4; Shield (5), 1998; 1999

Mimmo Paladino’s enigmatic figurative artworks resist specific interpretation and offer the viewer a multitude of associations and meanings. Underpinning his practice is an eclectic reference to archaic myth and personal memory through which he has developed a distinct iconography. The “bucrane”, or mask, is a recurring motif and features at the centre of each of the six circular prints included in the series Shields, 1999. Carte Siciliane (4) is one of a series of 12 prints in which the artist layers complex forms, techniques and materials. These works demonstrate the artist’s intimate understanding of gesture and memory, and his ability to draw out the expressive quality of his medium.
