Join us for a special talk and screening with Museo Jumex’s Chief Curator, Kit Hammonds.
Since opening its doors to the public in November 2013, the Museo Jumex has been one of the foremost contemporary art museums in Latin America. Kit will discuss Museo Jumex, its program, the context of contemporary art in Mexico, as well as the museum’s current residency at the South London Gallery.
The talk will be followed by a screening of a new, short documentary about artist Ana Pellicer (1946-2025). Pellicer’s work Colar de Oaxaca (Oaxacan Necklace) is currently on display at the SLG Fire Station as part of our current exhibition, Museo Jumex in Residence (Part 1).
The film, produced by MASA Gallery and Estudio de Producción, is presented in homage to this significant artist who passed away shortly after its filming and during the preparation of the exhibition. It shares her personal reflections on her work and the changing context of Mexico and its arts.
ABOUT KIT HAMMONDS
Kit Hammonds is Chief Curator of the Museo Jumex, Mexico City, where he leads the artistic, public programmes, education and publications. He has previously held positions as Senior Tutor in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art and was a former Curator at the South London Gallery. From 2015-2017 he was a Taiwan Fellow and Visiting Professor in Curating in Taipei.
ABOUT ANA PELLICER
Ana Emilia Pellicer López de Llergo (b. 1946) is a Mexican sculptor, artisan and jewelry maker. She is the widow of American sculptor, James Metcalf, with whom she established an important artist colony and school, the Adolfo Best Maugard School of Arts and Crafts, dedicated to the promotion of traditional coppersmith techniques in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, in 1973. In 1986, Pellicer sculpted life size jewelry designed to fit the Statue of Liberty, including huge earrings, to mark the centenary of the statue in New York City and Paris. Ana Pellicer was awarded the Gertrudis Bocanegra medal in 2018, this award is given to women who do exceptional work in favor of the progress of the state of Michoacán. Part of this work was performed during her first years living in Santa Clara del Cobre, where she encouraged women to become involved in the production of jewelry, thus helping them improve their economic standing and that of their families.
