Join us for a performance exploring the hidden infrastructures and informal economies of communist Poland, accompanying Monika Sosnowska’s current exhibition Weight of Matter.

We were too poor to spend our vacation in the country, is a new performance by Ewa Poniatowska exploring borders, smuggling and Polish commercial tourism in the 1970s-1990s. The work stems from her research into black markets and the history of underground commerce in communist countries. Featuring a musical score by Ewa, and performed with Kazumi Nishimura.

ARTIST BIOS

Ewa Poniatowska is a Polish artist based in London. Her practice spans across visual art, performance and music, often playing with symbols of desire and facades of luxury. Poniatowska is also the co-founder of RSVP, a nomadic platform for performance and live-art and one half of an experimental music and performance duo Rat Section.

Kazumi Nishimura is a Japanese artist and performer based in London. Her practice brings together dance, food, and visual expression, drawing on her experience as a dancer, and private dining chef. Through her work with nyotaimori, she explores ritual and intimacy from a female perspective, considering the body as both a medium of expression and a site of encounter.
