Spanning from historical romances to futuristic tales, this series immerses viewers in the depth and fervour of these narratives. It vividly portrays the longing, the fervent passion, and the intense obsession that arise from human attraction.

PROGRAMME:
LAST NIGHT IRL directed by Olaoluwapo Adediji
Insecure Annu is abandoned by her friend at a virtual reality house party. Giving in to the social pressure, Annu tries out the beauty filters. In between her selections, an unfiltered, mysterious man catches a glimpse of her natural face, sparking a passionate fascination between the two.
NOUS LES GRIOTS directed by Demba Konate
Daouda is a father from Senegal living in France. Malik, his son, wants to marry Mariama. A meeting between the families is organized around a meal. Daouda discovers that the families are from two different social castes: his is griot, and the other family is noble.
CLAUDIA directed by Benjamin Kuffuor
A man struggling to overcome a breakup goes to extreme lengths to bring his lover back into his life, even if it’s in the realm of fantasy. Claudia is a twisted romance drama drawing on classic textures to tell a modern story of 21st century loneliness, isolation and distortion.
SEASONS OF LONGING directed by Robyn Phillips
Seasons of Longing, a bio fiction short film, is about a queer love that took place long before our time. When love had to adapt and survive. But nearly 100 years later, that love still exists. In 1930s photographs taken by the lovers, uncovered in a forgotten family archive.
WARM directed by Lindo Mthimukulu
In “Warm” (2023), a young couple’s routine is explored. Dolly’s role of a homemaker is demanded through Ngozi’s dominance. Dolly decides to break free but struggles due to societal expectations. A dream sequence reveals her ingrained entrapment. Despite seeking liberation, Dolly realizes societal norms confine her. Her death brings no escape, as Ngozi objectifies her, emphasizing her lack of freedom. The film delves into Dolly’s struggle for autonomy within a stifling framework.

This screening is part of Film Africa 2024. Film Africa, London’s biggest celebration of African and African diaspora cinema presented by the Royal African Society, returns for its 11th edition from Friday 25 October to Sunday 3 November 2024.
