Direction is a new wallpaper artwork, installed in Art Block in April 2026. It was designed by the artist Divine Southgate-Smith, in collaboration with Art Assassins, the SLG’s youth collective.
The Art Assassins led the creative direction. They did not want the wallpaper to be a repeat pattern or too busy. They chose a strong, block colour and wanted the elements to vary in size.
Southgate-Smith asked the group to write down some key words that they associate with Art Assassins and what they want from the programme. Words included: ‘Direction’, ‘Future’ and ‘Goals’.
The Art Assassins then brought in objects that are personally significant to their artistic practice or sense of self. These objects, ranging from paint brushes to bracelets, were then digitally scanned alongside the key words and added into the wallpaper design.
