SLG Forever: Championing Art and Community

The South London Gallery has been free and open to all for 135 years. Today, it is one of the best places to see ground-breaking contemporary art in London. We are recognised internationally and embedded in our local community.

The SLG is a charity whose work has been transformative for countless artists, children and young people, and inspired millions of visitors.

In 2026 we are launching the SLG Forever anniversary campaign, marked by special events and activations throughout the year, to raise much-needed funds to build on this legacy and make an even greater impact.

Every donation to our SLG Forever campaign will help us to:

  • commission new work by some of today’s most exciting artists: our year-round exhibitions programme has an emphasis on presenting new work by established, mid-career and emerging British and international artists, often by those who have rarely or never had a solo show in a London institution. Our group shows bring together works by established and lesser-known artists, often exploring important themes;
  • engage thousands more local children and young people each year: our innovative Communities and Learning Programmes impact positively on the lives of thousands of participants in creative projects taking place at the SLG, in schools and community centres, and at Art Block, our free  space for children and families on Sceaux Gardens housing estate.
  • upgrade our beautiful historic main gallery building: the SLG’s original Grade II listed building opened in 1891 as a purpose-built gallery. Today we welcome over 200,000 visitors a year. We now need to upgrade our spaces to accommodate our growing audience, make urgent repairs, and ensure that the SLG maintains its reputation for being one of the most beautiful gallery spaces in London;
  • maintain the accessibility of our unique artist-designed garden: designed in 2016 by internationally acclaimed artist Gabriel Orozco, the much-loved garden is showing signs of wear and tear having been the location of thousands of visits, performances and events over the past decade. We now urgently need to make improvements to ensure the garden is once-again fully wheelchair friendly and welcoming for everyone to enjoy.
